Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease is named after three doctors that first identified the disease in 1886.

  1. Jean-Martin Charcot
  2. Pierre Marie
  3. Howard Henry Tooth
CMT is one of the most common inherited neurological disorders. it affects 1 in 2,500 people in the USA. It effects the nerves in you whole body.



WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF CHARCOT-MARIE-TOOTH DISEASE?????

  • foot deformalities
  • difficulty with motor skills
  • weakness in the foot and lower leg muscles
The symptoms usually show up in adolescences or early adulthood. these could also be delayed until mid-adulthood. the pain can range from mild to severe. CMT is not a fatal disease.





HOW IS CHARCOT-MARIE-TOOTH DISEASE DIAGNOSED??

It starts off with the standard patient history, family history, and neurological examination. The patients are asked about their symptoms and if any family memebers hav the disease. The doctor looks for muscle weakness and all of the symptomes. The patient may have nerve enlargement that may be fel or even seen through the skin.
